False-colour X-ray image of the “XMM-XXL North” survey field, XMM-Newton’s largest continuously covered sky area. The image has been created while compiling the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue 4XMM-DR11s from overlapping XMM-Newton observations and is 9 sky degrees wide and 5.4 degrees high. With our stacked source detection software, we have revealed almost 15,000 X-ray emitting objects in the field. (c) AIP/I. Traulsen
