XMM-Newton Postdoctoral position in X-ray Astronomy (July 2023)

IRAP, Toulouse, France

The `Astrophysics of Compact Objects’ group in the GAHEC department of IRAP, Toulouse invites applications for a postdoctoral position to participate in the IRAP XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (SSC) activities. IRAP directs the 8 European institutes that constitute the XMM-Newton SSC, responsible in part for producing the XMM-Newton Science Analysis Software (SAS), the identification of serendipitously detected X-ray sources and producing catalogues of XMM-Newton detected sources. The group is also involved in current and future projects such as INTEGRAL, Fermi, NuSTAR, CTA, SVOM and is leading the development of the X-ray Integral Field Unit foreseen for Athena.

As well as participating in SSC activities, the successful applicant will be expected to collaborate with other group members working on compact objects, using data from XMM-Newton and other observatories such as NuSTAR, Chandra, Fermi etc. The groups particular interests are neutron star timing (pulsars and QPOs), ultra luminous X-ray sources, compact binaries in general and intermediate mass black holes.

The candidate is expected to have: experience in high energy astrophysics; some programming skills and experience in compact objects. It would also be advantageous to have skills in interpreting data from other wavelengths. The post is open to candidates of any nationality who hold a PhD. The post is initially for one year, starting as early as November 2023 and renewable for a further two years. Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae, a summary of research interests, a list of publications and and organise for two letters of recommendation to be sent (all as pdf files) to Natalie Webb ( Natalie.Webb@irap.omp.eu ) before the 7th July 2023.

Included Benefits:

Additional funding for conferences, collaboration, personal equipment and publication is available. The position includes full access to the French healthcare system (medical and dental, sick leave, maternity leave).

Postdoctoral position at Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory (July 2023)

The Observatory is one of the member institutions of the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (SSC) and it also harbours the CDS (Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg). The SSC group is also actively involved in future missions such as SVOM and Athena or projets such as XMM2Athena.

Within the SSC consortium Strasbourg is responsible for a data reduction task that extracts multi-wavelength information for all XMM-Newton EPIC sources. In addition, the SSC provides software tools and specific databases inherited from the ARCHES European project which aim at easing the identification of EPIC sources thanks to multi-catalogue probabilistic cross-correlation and associated spectral energy distributions. SSC activities are carried out in close collaboration with CDS.

The successful candidate is expected to participate in all SSC activities and to focus part of his/her research work on the scientific exploitation of the existing multi-wavelength data currently based on the XMM catalogues produced by the SSC.

Scientific interests close to those of the hosting team (X-ray binaries, ULXs, X-ray source populations in Magellanic Clouds and nearby galaxies) would be welcome.

The position is funded by the Université de Strasbourg and by the French Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales  (CNES) for one year and renewable yearly. Starting date might be as early as July 2023.

Applicants should send a CV, a  list of publications, a statement of research interests and contact details of two referees to Dr L. Michel or Dr. Pierre Maggi no later than end of July, 2023.

Informal inquiries can be directed to Dr. L. Michel (laurent.michel@astro.unistra.fr) or Dr. P. Maggi (pierre.maggi@astro.unistra.fr), no later than end of July, 2023.

Postdoctoral position in High-Energy Astrophysics in Strasbourg (France) XMM2ATHENA

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position at Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory (ObAS) to participate in the EU-funded project H2020 SPACE  XMM2ATHENA. The ObsAS harbours the Centre de Donnees astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS) and is one of the member institutions of the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (SSC). The institute is also actively involved in future projects such as SVOM, IXPE, eXTP and Athena.

XMM2ATHENA is a collaboration of 9 European Institutes including members of the XMM-Newton SSC to develop innovative methods to maximize the return from the current X-ray observatory XMM-Newton and prepare for the forthcoming X-ray mission Athena.

The postdoc will lead efforts to expand the functionalities of the statistical multi-wavelength cross-matching software developed by the ARCHES FP-7 European project formerly led by Strasbourg. The improved identification and classification tool is key for the project. We also expect the successful applicant to actively take part in the scientific exploitation of this tool; Scientific interests close to those of the hosting team (X-ray binaries, ULXs, X-ray source populations in the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds and nearby galaxies) would be welcome.

The applicant is expected to have a PhD in Physics or Astronomy, experience in high energy astrophysics and programming skills. The salary is based on the French public service scale and the applicant’s previous experience. Additional funding for conferences, collaboration, personal equipment and publication is available. The position includes full access to the French healthcare system (medical and dental, sick leave, maternity leave) and pension fund. The initial appointment is for one year, starting before April 2023, with the possibility of extension for a second year depending on availability of funds.

Candidates should send a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a summary of research interests (2-3 pages max) and contact details of two referees to Ada Nebot (ada.nebot@astro.unistra.fr) before the 9th of January 2023. Late applications will be cosidered. ObAS is an equal-opportunity employer. We encourage applications from women and minorities.

PostDoctoral Position

H2020 SPACE XMM2ATHENA postdoctoral position

NOA/IAASARS, ATHENS, GREECE

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position at the Institute of Astronomy Astrophysics Space Applications and Remote Sensing (IAASARS) of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). The successful applicant will closely collaborate with the X-ray group of the IAASARS (Dr. Akylas, Dr. Georgantopoulos, Dr. Georgakakis) to develop novel tools, largely based on Artificial Intelligence algorithms, that will generate value-added products (e.g. photometric redshifts, upper limits) for the 4XMM serendipitous source catalogue. The scientific exploitation of these products will also be part of the contract.

The position is funded by the EU H2020 XMM2ATHENA project. It brings together 9 European nodes with extensive expertise in high energy astrophysics, including members of the XMM-Newton and Athena Science ground segments, to develop innovative X-ray analysis methods and algorithms. These will be tested on existing XMM-Newton data and will form the basis for the Athena data analysis software, currently at the beginning of the developmental phase.
