IRAP directs the 8 European institutes that constitute the XMM-Newton SSC, responsible in part for producing the XMM-Newton Science Analysis Software (SAS), the identification of serendipitously detected X-ray sources and producing catalogues of XMM-Newton detected sources. The group is also involved in current and future projects such as INTEGRAL, Fermi, NuSTAR, CTA, SVOM and is leading the development of the X-ray Integral Field Unit foreseen for Athena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">As well as participating in SSC activities, the successful applicant will be expected to collaborate with other group members working on compact objects, using data from XMM-Newton and other observatories such as NuSTAR, Chandra, Fermi etc. The groups particular interests are neutron star timing (pulsars and QPOs), ultra luminous X-ray sources, compact binaries in general and intermediate mass black holes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">The candidate is expected to have: experience in high energy astrophysics; some programming skills and experience in compact objects. It would also be advantageous to have skills in interpreting data from other wavelengths. The post is open to candidates of any nationality who hold a PhD. The post is initially for one year, starting as early as November 2023 and renewable for a further two years. The position includes full access to the French healthcare system (medical and dental, sick leave, maternity leave).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2>Postdoctoral position at Strasbourg Astronomical Observatory (July 2023)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">The Observatory is one of the member institutions of the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (SSC) and it also harbours the CDS (Centre de Donn\u00e9es astronomiques de Strasbourg). The SSC group is also actively involved in future missions such as SVOM and Athena or projets such as XMM2Athena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">Within the SSC consortium Strasbourg is responsible for a data reduction task that extracts multi-wavelength information for all XMM-Newton EPIC sources. In addition, the SSC provides software tools and specific databases inherited from the ARCHES European project which aim at easing the identification of EPIC sources thanks to multi-catalogue probabilistic cross-correlation and associated spectral energy distributions. SSC activities are carried out in close collaboration with CDS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">The successful candidate is expected to participate in all SSC activities and to focus part of his\/her research work on the scientific exploitation of the existing multi-wavelength data currently based on the XMM catalogues produced by the SSC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">Scientific interests close to those of the hosting team (X-ray binaries, ULXs, X-ray source populations in Magellanic Clouds and nearby galaxies) would be welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">The position is funded by the Universit\u00e9 de Strasbourg and by the French Centre National d&rsquo;Etudes Spatiales&nbsp; (CNES) for one year and renewable yearly. The ObsAS harbours the Centre de Donnees astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS) and is one of the member institutions of the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (SSC). The institute is also actively involved in future projects such as SVOM, IXPE, eXTP and Athena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">XMM2ATHENA is a collaboration of 9 European Institutes including members of the XMM-Newton SSC to develop innovative methods to maximize the return from the current X-ray observatory XMM-Newton and prepare for the forthcoming X-ray mission Athena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">The postdoc will lead efforts to expand the functionalities of the statistical multi-wavelength cross-matching software developed by the ARCHES FP-7 European project formerly led by Strasbourg. The improved identification and classification tool is key for the project. The scientific exploitation of these products will also be part of the contract.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">The position is funded by the EU H2020 <a href=\"http:\/\/xmm-ssc.irap.omp.eu\/xmm2athena\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">XMM2ATHENA<\/a> project. It brings together 9 European nodes with extensive expertise in high energy astrophysics, including members of the XMM-Newton and Athena Science ground segments, to develop innovative X-ray analysis methods and algorithms. These will be tested on existing XMM-Newton data and will form the basis for the Athena data analysis software, currently at the beginning of the developmental phase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">Preferred qualifications include&nbsp; a PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics or related field by the start date as well as experience in (i) high energy astrophysics, (ii) programming of complex algorithms with emphasis on machine\/deep learning, (iii) handling of large multiwavelength datasets and (iv) population studies of extragalactic sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">The post is for 18 months, starting in early 2022.
